The hymn “In the Garden” has a rich history that dates back to its creation in 1912. It was written by C. Austin Miles, a former pharmacist who later became a gospel songwriter. The inspiration for “In the Garden” came to Miles while he was in a cold, dreary basement in Pitman, New Jersey, which didn’t even have a window, let alone a view of a garden. Despite these surroundings, he was inspired by the gospel of John, chapter 20, which recounts Mary Magdalene’s visit to Jesus’ tomb and her subsequent encounter with Him after His resurrection. Miles imagined himself witnessing this event, feeling the joyous companionship with Jesus. This profound experience led him to write the lyrics and compose the music for the hymn in the same evening.
“But now thus says the Lord, he who created you… Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1
